We are pleased to announce that registration is now open for our 2026 Conference, which will focus on a highly relevant and timely theme: “Anticipating Change and the Role of Research in Shaping Future Food Systems.” At a time when Agrinatura is expanding its membership, strengthening cross-sectoral partnerships, and supporting research and innovation in the Global South — in alignment with the EU Global Gateway strategy — your participation will be invaluable in helping to shape these strategic reflections.

Agrinatura Conference 2026 –  Register!

The General Assembly Conference of Agrinatura will take place on 26–27 May 2026 at the University of Reading, under the theme “Anticipating Change and the Role of Research in Shaping Future Food Systems.” The conference will start on 26 May in the afternoon and conclude on 27 May in the afternoon, allowing time for both strategic reflection and interactive exchange.
The programme is structured around three progressive moments. It will begin by identifying the key signals already reshaping global food systems and research agendas, followed by an exploration of plausible futures and transformation pathways towards 2035–2050.
The second part of the conference will feature parallel thematic groups, enabling discussions on topics such as multi-actor innovation, foresight and scenario planning, climate resilience, digital and data-enabled food systems, research–policy interfaces, and shifts in global trade and markets. Equity, inclusion and the valorisation of local knowledge will run as cross-cutting themes across all sessions.
The final plenary will translate these reflections into strategic choices for research institutions, partnerships and networks, focusing on how research and education must evolve to remain relevant, credible and impactful in a rapidly changing global context.
The format will combine plenary debates, panel discussions, interactive sessions and collective synthesis moments, ensuring broad participation and exchange among members and partners.
We warmly invite members who are interested in contributing — for example by helping to frame thematic sessions, facilitating discussions, or proposing interactive formats and speakers — to express their interest.

VCA4D

Value Chain Analysis for Development (VCA4D) project is looking for the Recruitment of a Project Director
Agrinatura is looking for a new Director – Team Leader for the service facility VCA4D financed by the European Commission/DG INTPA. Read the ToR here.

Our guest speaker for this episode was Dr Gideon Onumah, Principal Economist in the Food and Markets Department of the Natural Resources Institute (NRI), who is also a senior VCA4D expert. He explored strategies to enhance the productivity of smallholder staple crop producers in Africa in situations where input subsidies are ineffective. This discussion was particularly relevant for EU delegations seeking to inform policy dialogue and programme design, as well as share experiences in boosting productivity and strengthening food systems.
In this episode, our guest speakers were Laura Gualdi, a quality support expert and programme manager within DG INTPA F3 (Sustainable Agri-Food Systems and Fisheries), and Margarida Lima de Faria, a senior researcher on social issues. They presented:
  • An overview of the EU Gender Action Plan III
  • Insights into how gender is analysed within the VCA4D approach
  • Key lessons learned on gender from nearly 40 VCA4D studies
  • Practical guidance for EU delegations on integrating gender into their agricultural and value chain actions.
SASi-SPi
SASi-SPi supports climate action and food security ambitions in Cameroon
Cameroon has set a target to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 35 percent by 2030 while strengthening national self-sufficiency and food security. The EU-funded SASi-SPi programme has provided intelligence to inform these ambitions. It has identified pathways to climate finance and delivered an assessment of three priority areas outlined in Cameroon’s Convergence Blueprint: namely, the rice-value chain, agroecology, and import substitutions. In addition, it has examined the sustainability implications and trade-offs associated with Cameroon’s ambitious import-substitution policy.

How can agroecological food systems help improve nutrition for low-income urban areas in Senegal?  
As part of the Knowledge and Research for Nutrition project of the European Commission, the Nutrition Research Facility (NRF) conducted a study to examine the potential impact pathways between agroecological food systems and nutrition, with a focus on low-income urban women. This study highlights conditions for creating “win–win” solutions that improve diets while supporting sustainable food systems. Read the study here.

WUR 

EU, Wageningen University explore deeper agriculture partnership with Guyana 
 Senior officials from the European Union and experts from Wageningen University & Research (WUR) visited Guyana to deepen cooperation in agriculture, innovation and climate-smart food systems. The visit follows last year’s EU-funded business mission to Europe and aims to turn discussions into concrete partnerships.
EU Ambassador Luca Pierantoni highlighted strong potential for expanded collaboration, with up to three new EU-Guyana business missions planned for 2025–2026. Agriculture, education and technology were identified as key entry points.
The initiative aligns with the EU’s Global Gateway strategy and supports Guyana’s priorities in food security, agro-processing and value-added production.
During the visit, the WUR delegation met national institutions and private stakeholders, noting strong youth engagement and significant potential to strengthen technical skills, food safety standards and export capacity.  More here.
Wageningen microbiologist awarded NWO grant for medicines from sea sponges 
Wageningen microbiologist Detmer Sipkema has received an ENW-M grant of over €400,000 from the Netherlands Organisation for Scientific Research (NWO) to explore the production of medicines from sea sponges.
Sea sponges produce bioactive compounds, including antibiotics and molecules that inhibit cell division, making them promising for medical research. The project aims to cultivate sponge cells in the laboratory to produce these compounds sustainably.
A recent breakthrough now allows researchers to keep sponge cells alive outside their natural environment.
The team will first focus on barrettide, a protein from the Arctic sponge Geodia barretti, as a model compound.
Researchers will investigate how environmental triggers and gene-editing technology (CRISPR-Cas) can stimulate continuous production.
The grant supports high-risk, curiosity-driven research with strong scientific potential. For Sipkema, the project fulfills a research vision he first pursued twenty years ago.  More here.

Fast-growing trees are taking over the forests of the future and putting biodiversity and climate resilience under pressure
Here is the summary in 10 lines, without bullets or numbering:
Climate change, deforestation and habitat loss are making forests more uniform, favouring fast-growing tree species. A global study covering more than 31,000 tree species shows that slow-growing, specialised trees are declining while fast growers are increasing.
Slow-growing species with dense wood and long lifespans play a crucial role in ecosystem stability, carbon storage and long-term resilience. Fast-growing species such as acacia, eucalyptus, poplar and pine thrive in disturbed environments but are ecologically more fragile.
These “sprinter” species are more vulnerable to drought, storms, pests and climate shocks, which can weaken forest resilience. Many naturalised (non-native) tree species possess traits that allow them to dominate disturbed landscapes.
Tropical and subtropical regions, rich in slow-growing endemic species, are particularly at risk.
Human activities, including intensive forestry and global trade, are accelerating these structural changes in forests. The researchers predict that fast-growing and naturalised species will become increasingly dominant in future forests. They call for active ecosystem management that prioritises the conservation of slow-growing and rare species to maintain biodiversity and resilience.

In sub-Saharan Africa, soil degradation threatens maize yields as much as climate change 
In sub-Saharan Africa, soil degradation may threaten maize production as much as – or even more than – climate change. An international study published in Global Change Biology and coordinated by CIRAD, in collaboration with 32 institutes, shows that declining soil fertility could have a greater long-term impact on yields than rising temperatures, shifting rainfall patterns, or increasing CO₂ levels.
Using four long-term field experiments and 15 soil–crop models, researchers simulated climate and soil changes across key maize-growing regions in Ivory Coast, Zimbabwe, and Kenya. Without fertilisation, soil organic carbon steadily declines, leading to significant yield losses. However, integrated soil fertility management—combining organic and mineral fertilisers—can triple yields over time and strengthen resilience under climate change.
Conducted within the Agricultural Model Intercomparison and Improvement Project (AgMIP), developed by NASA and Columbia University, the study highlights the urgent need to place soil restoration at the heart of climate adaptation strategies for African agriculture.

Kyambogo University and AGRIFOSE Project Empower Rural Women Through Dairy Value Addition and Green Energy 
For decades, the rhythm of life in Western Uganda has been dictated by the price of a liter of milk and the effect of climate change especially prolonged dry spells. When prices fell and scarcity of milk in the dry spells, families struggled. Today, a quiet but powerful revolution is unfolding as rural women swap traditional farming for high-tech entrepreneurship, turning cow ghee into skincare, nutritious foods and cow dung into clean energy.
Through a strategic partnership between Kyambogo University HuB and the AgriFoSe Project, hundreds of women across Kiruhura and Bushenyi districts have transitioned from subsistence farmers to “Value-Addition” experts.
The AgriFoSe project has successfully transitioned rural women from subsistence cattle-rearing to leading competitive agribusinesses. By integrating Value Addition (turning raw milk into high-value goods) with Renewable Energy (Biogas), the project has addressed the triple challenge of poverty, health risks from wood smoke, and environmental degradation. More here.

Three new Blended Intensive Programmes (BIP) proposed within EUNICE – international, intensive courses combining an online component with mobility abroad. This is an opportunity to gain practical experience, work on real challenges, and develop your skills in an international academic environment. Check which program best suits your interests and take advantage of the opportunity to gain experience that goes beyond the lecture hall. 
  • Green Makers Camp – Sustainable Living & Building (EUNICE Volunteering Camp)
From 29 June to 10 July 2026, students will take part in eco-renovation works at the historic Abbey of Maroilles (France), explore permaculture and biodiversity-friendly cultivation in Belgium, and join workshops on circular economy and sustainable housing. The programme also includes nature walks, wildlife observation, and cultural visits in the Avesnois and Mons regions.
  • BIP Strengthening resilience in times of polycrises
Open to all EUNICE students (Bachelor, Master, PhD) who are interested in topics like resilience, crisis management, intelligence, and related transformation aspects. The course will take place both in Helsinki and in Vaasa. This allows the participants to meet national representatives from the Finnish Parliament and the Finnish Environment Institute so that students can familiarize themselves with the Finnish comprehensive security model, as well as local stakeholders such as the City of Vaasa.
  • Innovating Solutions – Micro-Nano Technologies and Sensors for Global Challenges (2026)
International Blended Intensive Programme (BIP) focused on cutting-edge micro- and nanotechnologies and sensor systems addressing today’s global challenges.
This research-oriented summer school combines an online component with an intensive on-site week at the University of Cantabria (Spain). The programme offers a unique opportunity to deepen technical knowledge, collaborate in an international academic environment, and strengthen research and innovation skills. Check details and deadlines here.

Acoustics: a neglected driver of evolution in fishes 
A recent study by researchers at the University of Liège highlights that acoustic communication has played a significant but previously overlooked role in the evolution of fishes, particularly in boxfishes. Traditional studies often focus on visual traits like coloration for species recognition, neglecting how many fish use sound in social interactions such as reproduction and territory defense. Boxfishes (family Ostraciidae) have a unique rigid, bony body that limits typical swimming, which may have influenced the evolution of their sound-producing mechanisms. All boxfish species can produce sounds, but Atlantic and Indo-Pacific subfamilies use different anatomical systems, with Atlantic species possessing a novel structure called the sphaera sonica and Pacific species having more specialized sonic muscles. Comparative analysis with the related Aracanidae family, which lacks a sound mechanism, suggests that muscles once used for swimming in boxfishes were repurposed for acoustic communication. This evolutionary process reflects a transition from mute to vocal species and greater specialization of sound structures. The findings argue for reassessing acoustic communication as an important evolutionary driver in the natural history of fishes, beyond just visual traits.

Global organic market hits all-time high in 2024 – Farmland holds steady at 99 million hectares 
In 2024, global retail sales of organic food and drink rose to 145.0 billion euros, underlining resilient consumer demand across major markets. At the same time, the global organic farming area remained close to 99 million hectares, providing continuity in the production base. According to the latest figures presented today at Biofach, the United States remained the world’s largest market, while Switzerland recorded the highest per capita consumption and the highest organic market share worldwide.
Consumers are spending more on organic food and drink across key markets, sending a clear signal to producers, processors, and retailers that demand remains resilient. The global retail sales of organic food and drink rose to 145.0 billion euros in 2024 (increase of 6.9 billion euros). In 2024, the United States remained the largest market (60.4 billion euros), followed by Germany (17 billion euros) and China (15.5 billion euros).
Switzerland recorded the highest per capita consumption worldwide at 481 euros per person and the highest organic market share globally at 12.3 percent of total food sales in 2024.
On the production side, organic farmland remained broadly stable at 98.9 million hectares, indicating continuity in the global production base. Australia had the largest organic agricultural area (53.0 million hectares), and Liechtenstein had the highest organic farmland share (43.5 percent).
The number of organic producers reached 4.8 million worldwide.
In 2024, combined organic imports into the EU and the United States reached 5.9 million metric tons, reflecting strong market pull and increasingly connected supply chains (up 12.3 percent, by 0.6 million metric tons). The largest exporters to the EU and U.S. markets were Mexico, Ecuador, and Canada.

When Biodiversity Meets Finance: Hynek Roubík on Building a Business Model for Nature 
 Can biodiversity protection become not only a moral and ecological imperative, but also a sound investment opportunity? As climate finance accelerates, new models are needed to fund nature in ways that are credible, measurable, and economically viable. In his commentary “Biodiversity Needs a Business Model,” Hynek Roubík, Dean at the Czech University of Life Sciences Prague, explores how science and finance can work together to make biodiversity investable.  Citing estimates from the World Bank that ecosystem degradation could cost USD 2.7 trillion annually by 2030, he highlights the urgent need for scalable solutions. The international BIO-CAPITAL project addresses this gap by developing science-based financial mechanisms that attract private capital while safeguarding ecological integrity.  Through tools such as AI-powered monitoring, natural capital accounting, biodiversity credits, and innovative financial instruments, BIO-CAPITAL aims to enable responsible, transparent, and long-term investment in nature. At the same time, Dr. Roubík stresses that strong governance, scientific rigor, and community involvement are essential to prevent greenwashing and ensure lasting impact.

Call for funding proposals: economics of climate change adaptation in Africa 
Raising Adaptation Impact and Ambition (RAIA) is inviting funding proposals to support research on the economics of climate change adaptation in Africa.
RAIA is a UK Aid-funded climate adaptation project under the Foreign Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO)’s Climate Adaptation and Resilience (CLARE) Research Programme.  The project is led by the UN Environment Programme (UNEP) in partnership with SEI Africa.
The project addresses persistent gaps in economic evidence, research capacity and policy tools needed to support effective climate adaptation in lower-income countries. It bridges the science–policy divide to ensure that research informs practical decision-making.
Grant details: Funding amount: USD 80,000–120,000 per project; 10-12 grants.
Proposed research may fall under one or more of the following thematic areas:
  • Quantifying the economic costs of climate impacts and adaptation responses
  • Identifying financial, economic, regulatory or market-based instruments to support climate action

The STREAMING Consortium has launched an Open Call for Proposals to support high-impact knowledge transfer projects strengthening collaboration between Europe and Africa, with a strong focus on agri-food systems, sustainability, and innovation ecosystems.

The AEDIB Joint Innovation Facility (JIF) – Scaling digital innovation through Africa–Europe partnerships 
The Joint Innovation Facility (JIF) is an Africa–Europe funding and collaboration mechanism designed to scale digitally enabled and commercially viable innovations through strong cross-border partnerships. The main JIF 2026 call focuses on cross-border cooperation projects between African and European actors that scale existing revenue-generating solutions. The objective is to further develop their digital components and enable cross-border market expansion. The facility targets innovations where digital technologies – such as advanced data solutions or artificial intelligence – are central to the product, service, or business model rather than an add-on. All supported projects must be climate-positive, meaning they generate a measurable positive contribution to climate change mitigation, adaptation, and/or resilience or present a credible pathway to doing so through project design and implementation. A core priority of JIF is to support AI applications that go beyond generic or experimental use.
Eligible countries for JIF: Benin, Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), Ghana, Côte d’Ivoire, Kenya, Mozambique, Namibia, Nigeria, Rwanda, Senegal, South Africa, Tanzania, Uganda, and Zambia. European partners must be based in one of the 27 EU Member States.

International Center for Genetic Engeeniring and Biotechnology – ICGEB Research Grants 2026 CRP – Collaborative Research Programme 
Funding opportunities are made available through the Collaborative Research Programme (CRP) – ICGEB Research Grants, a dedicated source of funding that aims to finance projects addressing original scientific problems of particular relevance for the host country and of regional interest.
Applicants for research grant proposals (identified as “CRPs”) should hold positions at Universities or Research Institutes in any of the ICGEB Member States.
The ICGEB CRP Grants programme was established in 1988 and aims to stimulate collaborative research in Member States and with the ICGEB Component laboratories, promote training of young scientists, and facilitate the creation of appropriate research facilities. The programme supports research projects in basic science, human healthcare, industrial and agricultural biotechnology and bioenergy. A call for applications is launched yearly to:
-Addressing scientific challenges rooted in your country or region
-Building long-term research capacity
-Training the next generation of scientists
-Strengthening international research partnerships
Funding: up to €25,000 per year, up to 3 years, coers consumables, small equipment, travel, and training.

Humboldt Research Professorship 
The Alexander von Humboldt Foundation is offering a new program for international top-tier researchers from all countries (excluding Germany): The new Humboldt Research Professorships allow outstanding international academics to conduct their innovative and creative research activities in Germany and establish them at German universities and research institutions without having to relinquish their posts abroad. Award winners are expected to initiate long-term collaborations with specialist colleagues in Germany, set up and manage an international working group in Germany and develop additional promising and creative research formats.
Humboldt Research Professors will be permitted to simultaneously continue conducting their own professorships or working groups in their countries of origin during the sponsorship. At the same time, they will also have the option to relocate fully to Germany if they choose. Long-term prospects for remaining in the country can be negotiated locally on an individual basis.
Funding:
– €1.5 million for theoretical researchers
– €3 million for academics in experimental disciplines
– Sum will be made available over a period of 5 years and serves to fund the sponsored individual’s research
– The receiving institution in Germany will be provided with an additional lump sum for administration amounting to 20% of the award amount

Call for proposals – Economics of Climate Change Adaptation in Africa (USD 80,000-120,000 per Grant) 
The SEI – Stockholm Environment Institute(SEI), under the Raising Adaptation Impact and Ambition (RAIA) programme, invites proposals from African research institutions to generate economic evidence that strengthens climate change adaptation planning and investment across Africa.
The call supports policy-relevant research that helps governments integrate adaptation into national development strategies, budgeting, and financial decision-making processes.
-Funding: Grant amount: USD 80,000-120,000 per project
-Project duration: Approximately 11 months
-Number of awards: 10-12 grants expected
Projects should analyse the economics of adaptation, including cost-benefit assessments, economic impacts of climate risks, and identification of cost-effective adaptation pathways that inform national policy.
Lead applicants must be legally registered African institutions, including universities, research institutes, think tanks, or policy research organisations.
Applicants should demonstrate expertise in economics, climate policy, risk analysis, or economic impact assessment.
Government ministries are not eligible to apply as lead institutions.

Call for Evidence Synthesis – Youth in Africa’s Just Food Systems Transitions  
Food systems across Africa are changing rapidly in response to climate pressures, technological shifts, and evolving markets. While these transitions are essential, they must also be fair, inclusive, and socially just—especially for young people and women who are central to these transformations. The research programme Youth in Just Food Systems Transitions, INCLUDE Knowledge Platform invites external researchers and research teams to develop an Evidence Synthesis Paper. This synthesis will bring together insights from ongoing case studies in Benin, Ghana, Rwanda, Somalia and South Africa.
The Evidence Synthesis will focus on:
-How food systems transformations (FST) affect young women and men across Africa
-The conditions under which FSTs contribute to decent livelihoods and youth employment
-Cross-cutting patterns, tensions, and trade-offs across contexts
-Political economy dynamics and multiple dimensions of justice
-Policy and practice recommendations for just food systems transition pathways
The selected researcher(s) will produce:
-A full Evidence Synthesis Paper
-A concise policy-oriented summary
-Engagement in dissemination activities

Call for Submissions – Global Conscious Food Systems Summit 2026 
We invite practitioners, farmers, policymakers, researchers, communities, and innovators from around the world to share their work at the Global Conscious Food Systems Summit, taking place in Bhutan from 31 August – 4 September 2026.
The Bhutan Summit 2026 aims to catalyze movement-building, collective action and investments for the integration of the inner dimension of food systems transformation in international, national and local food systems agendas and actions. This landmark gathering will advance a new paradigm for food systems transformation—one that recognizes the vital role of culture, values, spirituality, happiness and inner development in catalyzing systemic change.

Supported by the International Science Partnerships Fund and the Department for Science, Innovation and Technology, this call advances SDG 7 & 13.

13th Africa–Europe Science Collaboration Forum: Empowering Innovation for a Sustainable Shared Future 
The Africa–Europe Science Collaboration Platform (AERAP) will convene its 13th Annual Forum in Brussels from 20 to 23 April 2026, bringing together policymakers, scientists, investors, and international organisations to strengthen the strategic partnership between Africa and Europe through science, technology, and innovation.
The 2026 Forum takes place as the European Union prepares its Multiannual Financial Framework (2028–2034)—a critical moment to align research, development, and investment priorities across continents. Under the theme “Science Collaboration for Shared Futures”, AERAP will showcase how collaborative research and innovation can advance global goals, drive sustainable growth, and foster equitable partnerships between Africa and Europe.
The programme will feature high-level sessions on key strategic areas, including:
  • AI, Digital Public Infrastructure, and Research Infrastructures (ESFRI) – exploring how digital science ecosystems can empower African and European researchers.

Final OECD statistics on official development assistance (ODA) and other resource flows to developing countries in 2024 
The OECD’s final 2024 development finance statistics show that official development assistance, in grant equivalent terms, from the Development Assistance Committee (DAC) member countries amounted to USD 214.5 billion, confirming a fall of 6.0%, in real terms from 2023.
In 2024, net ODA and concessional finance from DAC members, non-DAC countries and multilateral providers totalled USD 254.8 billion, a 4.5% decrease over 2023 in real terms. As net ODA from DAC countries declined (8.3%) to USD 211.9 billion, ODA from non-DAC providers also fell and amounted to USD 17.98 billion, a 2.7% decrease in real terms. These bilateral providers extended an additional USD 28.8 billion in the form of other official flows to developing countries primarily through private sector instruments. Meanwhile, outflows from the core budgets of multilateral organisations (concessional and non-concessional commitments) amounted to USD 271 billion, an increase by 4% from 2023.
Additionally, from 2012 to 2024, amounts mobilised from the private sector through official development finance interventions exceeded USD 600 billion, peaking at USD 77 billion in 2024.
These data points highlight the activities of over 150 providers who report their development finance statistics to the OECD annually.  Access the publication here.
How bee brains are shaping next-generation computer chips 
Researchers are drawing inspiration from bee brains to design next-generation computer chips, aiming for unprecedented efficiency in navigation technology. An EU-funded initiative called InsectNeuroNano is at the forefront of this effort, seeking to replicate the bee’s internal navigation system – which relies on analyzing sky polarization and flying speed – on a tiny, low-power chip. Bees achieve this without GPS, using a remarkably efficient system that consumes less than one hundredth of a watt.
Current chips attempting similar tasks are significantly larger and more power-hungry, weighing over 80 grams and using more than 7 watts. The InsectNeuroNano team, comprised of scientists from five European countries, is building a specialized chip that determines its own position, intended for applications like low-cost environmental sensors and insect-like robots capable of tasks such as pollution cleanup or artificial pollination.
Unlike versatile standard chips, this insect-inspired chip will perform a single task – determining position using light sensor signals and speed data – employing nanophotonic circuits to guide light for energy-efficient data transmission. Collaboration between biologists and engineers is crucial, with virtual chip models aiding both fields in understanding insect brain function. While a fully functional “robot bee” is still about a decade away, the project has already produced a prototype and represents a significant step toward smaller, more efficient navigation technology.  More here.

 FAO AGRIS welcomes new institutions from across the globe, strengthening international exchange of agricultural knowledge and scientific collaboration.
In the Caribbean, the Asociación de Técnicos Azucareros de Cuba brings nearly a century of expertise in sugar agro-industrial science. From Ethiopia, the Amhara Agricultural Research Institute advances productivity, resilience and food security through applied research.
In Brazil, the Universidade Federal Rural do Rio de Janeiro contributes its long-standing legacy in agricultural education and rural development. Lorestan University (Iran) enhances the network with interdisciplinary research focused on sustainability and regional development. In the Russian Federation, VIC Animal Health and the Federal Scientific Center for Vegetable Growing add expertise in agrarian science and crop breeding. From China, Hainan University and the Beijing Academy of Agriculture and Forestry Sciences strengthen innovation in tropical agriculture and forestry systems. In Rwanda, the University of Lay Adventists of Kigali joins with a strong commitment to higher education and community engagement. More here.
Carbon markets and food systems 
Food systems account for around one third of global greenhouse gas emissions and offer major mitigation opportunities across agriculture, land use, value chains and consumption. Yet many high-impact areas remain overlooked.
This publication provides one of the first comprehensive assessments of how food-system-related mitigation activities are represented in international carbon markets. Drawing on data from more than 9,200 projects across UNFCCC mechanisms and independent standards, the study examines nearly 4.9 GtCO₂e of issued carbon credits through a food systems lens.
The findings highlight significant gaps, including the underrepresentation of farm-level emissions, food loss and waste, livestock methane and household energy use. The paper also points to the need for adapted methodologies, better integration of small-scale projects and stronger alignment between compliance and voluntary markets.

Women-led sustainable innovation in small island agriculture: challenges and barriers 
In small island agriculture, sustainable innovation is vital for strengthening resilience in the face of resource constraints and climate impacts. Despite women’s undeniable contribution to social, economic, and environmental sustainability in these societies, their leadership and decision-making capacity in developing sustainable innovative solutions for agricultural opportunities and challenges continue to face systemic barriers. Identifying and mitigating these barriers has a positive impact on the development, resilience, and well-being of small island societies. Using a mixed-methods approach, this conceptual expansion research identifies eleven key characteristics of small islands’ agriculture, introduces eighteen orientations for sustainable innovation within this context, and investigates women’s roles in sustainable innovation. It also identifies barriers and challenges that hinder women from attaining leadership roles in developing sustainable innovation in small island agriculture and proposes nine possible mitigation strategies and measures. More here.
 
AfDB–AFD meeting aligns partners on energy, jobs and agriculture as cofinancing nears €2.4bn 
The African Development Bank Group and Agence Française de Développement (AFD) have held discussions on scaling up joint investment and aligning more closely on Africa’s development priorities. Senior leaders of the two institutions met in Abidjan on 23 January to sharpen a shared focus on high impact sectors—energy, including under the Mission 300 initiative; jobs and skills; entrepreneurship; water; and agriculture—while committing to accelerate delivery under a cofinancing partnership that has mobilised nearly €2.4 billion.
The discussions at the Bank Group’s headquarters are expected to feed directly into expected negotiations on a new partnership agreement. More here.

AU Digital & Innovation Fellowship Programme – a career accelerator designed for Africa’s top tech talent.  
The African Union (AU) Digital & Innovation Fellowship is a 12-month immersive program that empowers Africa’s brightest digital innovators to work from within AU institutions.
Through a structured placement within the AU system, fellows receive tailored capacity building, professional development, international exposure, and financial support throughout the duration of the programme.
The purpose is to co-develop data-driven and technology-enabled solutions with AU staff, based on identified challenges and technological gaps, to strengthen governance, public service delivery, and institutional capacity across the AU institutions.
Launched in 2021, the fellowship supports the implementation of the AU Digital Transformation Strategy and Agenda 2063, opening concrete pathways for African youth to engage in continental governance and public sector innovation.

Accelerating the circular economy transition in East & Southern Africa  
A new study, commissioned by the SWITCH to Circular Economy in Eastern and Southern Africa (SWITCH-2-CE in ESA) programme, takes stock of the circular economy landscape across 13 countries, with a focus on plastic packaging and e-waste value chains.
The findings show growing awareness, strong local initiatives, and significant opportunities for impact, alongside clear priorities for action: stronger policy frameworks, inclusive Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) systems, better data, and enhanced regional coordination.
To support policymakers and stakeholders, new Factsheets translate the evidence into practical, decision-oriented insights, mapping circular economy maturity and highlighting key levers to accelerate progress.

CORAF – West and Central African Council for Agricultural Research and Development  –  Modernizing agricultural advisory services
As part of the Food System Resilience Program (PRSA/FSRP), CORAF supports countries in the region in transforming their extension services. Burkina Faso has just adopted a national guide, a result of this regional cooperation.
CORAF commissioned the Network of Agricultural and Rural Advisory Services of West and Central Africa (RESCAR-AOC) to conduct a capitalization study in thirteen countries. Eight West African countries — Burkina Faso, Mali, Ghana, Niger, Nigeria, Sierra Leone, Senegal and Togo — and five Central African countries — Cameroon, Gabon, Central African Republic, Democratic Republic of Congo and Chad — were examined.
The results of this mapping study are revealing: 49 methods and 86 agricultural advisory tools were identified in the field and 12 particularly innovative methods and 6 tools were selected for wider deployment. Summary sheets were developed to facilitate their adoption by the FSRP countries. Burkina Faso is the first country to update its national guide. More here.

Embrapa identifies wild arachis gene that primes defense in cultivated crops 
Findings by Embrapa Genetic Resources and Biotechnology (DF), in collaboration with national and international partners, indicate that genes from wild peanut relatives can enhance the resistance of cultivated peanuts to multiple agricultural stresses. This unprecedented approach — rooted in native South American species—broadens the possibilities for genetic improvement by combining ancestral biodiversity with advanced biotechnology.
One example is AdEXLB8, a gene isolated from Arachis duranensis, one of the wild ancestral species of cultivated peanut. Research shows that introducing this gene triggers plant defense responses that may help address key challenges such as drought, nematodes, and fungal diseases.
A central innovation of the study is demonstrating that the gene does not provide resistance directly; instead, it activates a mechanism known as defense priming, which prepares the plant to respond more effectively when stress occurs, according to a press release.
The results were decisive: tobacco, soybean, and peanut plants engineered with this gene showed greater drought tolerance, increased resistance to root-knot nematodes (Meloidogyne spp.), and improved tolerance to fungal diseases such as Sclerotinia sclerotiorum. In roots where AdEXLB8 was overexpressed, nematode infection fell by 60% — with no negative impacts on yield or final product quality. More here.

Economic Outlook for Southeast Asia, China and India 2025 
The Economic Outlook for Southeast Asia, China and India is a regular publication on regional economic growth and development in Emerging Asia – Brunei Darussalam, Cambodia, Indonesia, Lao PDR, Malaysia, Myanmar, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, Timor-Leste and Viet Nam, as well as China and India. It comprises a thematic chapter addressing a major issue facing the region and a series of country notes. The 2025 edition focuses on enhancing disaster risk financing. Countries in Emerging Asia are increasingly exposed to various types of disasters, and the frequency and severity of these events have continued to escalate in recent years. Disaster risk financing is a critical tool to mitigate impacts. The report explores various innovative policy solutions for countries in the region to strengthen institutional capacity, facilitate and broaden policy options, enhance disaster risk finance education, and strengthen regional co-operation. More here.

Key lessons from a recent NRFU–Science Europe webinar point to one priority for Ukraine’s research system: stronger monitoring and evaluation. 
On 25 November 2025, the National Research Foundation of Ukraine (NRFU) and Science Europe held the second webinar in the series ‘Building Capacity in the Ukrainian Research and Innovation Ecosystem,’ focusing on Developing and Implementing Monitoring Tools for R&D Projects.
Among the ongoing challenges, such as damaged infrastructure, displaced researchers, financial instability, fragmented donor requirements, and limited capacity, effective and reliable monitoring systems are essential to improve R&D management and align reporting with European standards.
A clear message emerged: robust monitoring is a strategic necessity. It supports better use of resources, enhances international credibility, and reinforces the resilience of Ukraine’s research ecosystem.
